Elgin & District Pipe Band

50th anniversary kilts

Elgin & District Pipe Band has entered its 50th anniversary year in style by unveiling its new tartan uniform. The Gordon & Ena Baxter Foundation was proud to play its part in the huge fundraising initiative, making a £10,000 award towards the £50,000 appeal.

Trustees were particularly impressed by the fundraising efforts of young band members, which included one player carrying her pipes across the gruelling Aonach Eagach Ridge before playing a tune. Band members were all focused on raising funds and that paid off just before Christmas when they stepped out on stage at Aberdeen Music Hall in support of Skippinish.

Akin to other groups, the pandemic had impacted on the band - with numbers dwindling and very few good quality uniforms left. That's now in the past and, with numbers swelling, the band has high hopes for the year ahead - both competitively and in the community.

The Foundation's chairman, George McIntyre, said: “For nearly half a century, Elgin & District Pipe Band has played a huge role in the life of this community – bringing traditional music to hundreds of events over the years.

“It is a part of our heritage and offers great educational opportunity for the area’s young people. In the run-up to this special anniversary, the Foundation was delighted to make this award, which we know will not only benefit the players of today but those in years to come.

“For any young player, wearing this beautiful new tartan will bring a sense of pride and belonging and our congratulations go to the band on their fundraising success. We know they have put in a lot of work.

“We wish them all the best for the next 50 years, and beyond.”
