Boom Preventers

Equipment for sail training vessel

Ocean Youth Trust Scotland supports some 650 young people every year by offering intensive youth work programmes at sea.

The charity was raising funds to upgrade safety equipment onboard its two sail training vessels and applied to The Gordon & Ena Baxter Foundation for support.

The application for £1195 to help reach their target was successful and new boom preventers have been installed on Alba Explorer and Alba Venturer. The equipment is designed to prevent the boom from swinging wildly when sailing downwind and will be in action over the summer as residential sail training voyages take place.

From March to November, both vessels are out sailing seven days a week - unleashing huge potential as they go, with lots of fun and adventure along the way.

As well as helping participants to build self confidence and resilience, young people are equipped with new skills for life, work and learning.
