Path accessibility works

A project at the RSPB Scotland Abernethy nature reserve aims to make the outdoors more accessible.

The Gordon & Ena Baxter Foundation granted a £20,000 award to support the work, which has seen two of the Loch Garten reserve's most popular woodland trails improved.

The Big Pines linear trail (0.7km) and the Two Lochs circular trail (2.4km) have been resurfaced and widened. Nether have steps or barriers to ensure they are suitable for wheelchair users, mobility scooters and prams.

The finishing touches - including benches and perches along both paths - will be added soon. The Cairngorms National Park Authority also funded this project, which fits in with the Foundation's health and environment themes.

Enjoying the peace, quiet and tranquillity of our wild spaces, away from crowds and traffic, is something that many people take for granted. But for people with disabilities, accessing and enjoying the wonders of our wild spaces can be a real struggle. By making these improvements, we will continue to ensure that nature is accessible to everyone. Everyone has a right to enjoy our wild places.
